Behind the Ballot: Democracy, Chicanery, and Electoral Technique in Modern India

Political commentaries on elections highlight the act and outcome of suffrage. Votes are tallied trends analyzed as pundits distill election results, post facto, into predictable storylines said to reveal so-called pulse nation, littered with clichés about popular mandates people's verdict. Such accounts interpret a straightforward index “popular will” without attention their differentiated experience how historically disenfranchised groups navigate complex institutional landscape. Elections not extraordinary events that transcend inequalities everyday life but time when hierarchies asserted, contested, fortified. This occurs through ballot well architecture institution tactical use its routine procedures. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK; Liberation Panthers Party), prominent Dalit-led (ex-untouchable) party in India, is case point. Combining ethnography from inside political campaign interviews VCK candidates, leaders, grassroots activists, this article employs symbols diagnostic study electoral institution, exploring tools techniques—which neither neutral nor freely available all—consolidate structural advantages privilege well-resourced players while hindering those excluded power.
